Change impacts us all. Whether you are an adult changing jobs, or a student changing classes, we all have to find a way to cope with something new – something different, from time to time.
As an adult, handling change can be incredibly difficult and stressful. Here are a few different tips that may help you navigate through any potential changes in your life:
- Acknowledgement: Acknowledging the feelings you have toward the change is really important for how you navigate through it. Whether you are experiencing positive or negative feelings toward the change, it is important to allow yourself to feel your emotions.
- Establish Routine: As you transition from one thing to something new, it is important to build a sustainable routine for yourself. This may aid in a sense of stability for you.
- Small Steps: Easing yourself into a transition, or taking small steps can help make the change more manageable and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
- Goal Setting: Allow yourself to create a goal for the change. Setting a clear, attainable goals can help make the transition feel easier.
- Stay positive and seek support: Remaining positive during change, and relying on your support network can be extremely helpful when navigating something new. Keeping an eye out for positives, and looking for things through a new lens or perspective can prove essential for adapting to change.
- Reflection: Reflecting on how you successfully overcame changes in the past (whether it be similar types of change, or entirely different), will help you see that you can make it through this new transition.
Finding ways to handle or cope with change is essential for continued happiness and health. Positive and negative changes happen all the time, so it is important that we know how to adapt and show resilience to allow ourselves to grow and learn.
