Understanding Different Professions in Mental Health

Written by Payton Adams (Clinical Intern) | Edited by Olivia Price, LCPC

The process of finding mental health support can be complicated due to the multiple professional titles and abbreviations used in the field. Backpack’s diverse team of licensed providers offers specialized training and expertise to meet the specific needs of our clients. The following guide explains the different mental health professionals who deliver care to patients.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

LCSWs use their social work education to provide therapy, case management, and advocacy services to patients. They help patients address emotional and behavioral problems by providing individual or family therapy, as well as connecting them with available community resources. LCSWs base their practice on a comprehensive patient assessment that includes environmental factors and social connections affecting mental health.

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

LPCs focus on delivering psychotherapy services to individuals, families, or groups. They help patients deal with anxiety, depression, trauma, and life changes. LPCs utilize research-based therapeutic methods to help patients develop better emotional control, self-knowledge, and personal development.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

LMFTs specialize in helping patients understand their family relationships and couple dynamics. They assist patients in addressing family system problems through their expertise in communication improvement, conflict resolution, and system adaptation. The therapeutic approach of LMFTs examines how family relationship patterns contribute to mental health problems.

Psychologist (PhD or PsyD)

Psychologists, who hold doctoral degrees in psychology, are trained to perform mental health assessments, diagnose conditions, and create treatment plans. They deliver individual and and group therapy sessions and conduct psychological tests to evaluate mental, emotional, and behavioral performance. Psychologists actively participate in research activities to develop innovative therapeutic methods.

Psychiatrist (MD or DO)

Psychiatrists hold medical degrees and specialize in mental health treatment, with the authority to prescribe medication. They conduct mental health evaluations to identify conditions before starting medication treatment and providing psychotherapy services. Psychiatrists often collaborate with therapists and counselors to create comprehensive treatment plans for patient care.

Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

PMHNPs are advanced practice nurses trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Their role includes medication prescription and management duties, and they work with other mental health professionals to create individualized treatment plans.

Understanding the different mental health professionals enables patients to select appropriate treatment options. These professionals offer distinct services, including therapy, emotional support, medication prescription, and specialized assessments. The Backpack team consists of multiple professionals who collaborate to provide clients with the specific mental health services they need for complete wellness.
